A friend showed me the site for MythTV yesterday - an open source project that is making a free "TiVo-on-steroids" program. As its creator describes it:

MythTV is a homebrew PVR project that I've been working on in my spare time. It's been under heavy development for two years, and is now quite useable and featureful.

It's really an interesting illustration of the open-source mindset (and the potentials it brings). As my friend put it "As long as you're recording it, why wouldn't you want to be able to edit the images while you're at it?"
