This is cute.

I've taken to reading georgewbush.com with some regularity since the debates. Mostly, it's for the exact reason I found Saddam's old spokesman so hilarious during the American advance on Baghdad - they'll spin their heads around in circles in trying to deny that a single unpleasant thing may be true, whatever insults to common sense are needed to back it up. Especially choice was their recap of "what they're saying about the debates" which had to dig all the way down to obscure local papers to find people who divined a decisive Bush victory. The summary read like a film ad for a known piece of trash - trumpeting the most ambivalent quotes declaring Bush a tentative victory as celebrations, and reaching into publications like The Las Vegas Review Journal

But take this example of the ongoing hilarity:

Edwards' Claim: Republican Leaders Are Criticizing The President On Iraq.
The Facts:

  1. Thirty Seven Democrats Were At Odds With Kerry And Edwards And Voted in Support Of The $87 Billion Iraq Supplemental
  2. Sen. John McCain Has Said The President "Deserves Not Only Our Support, But Our Admiration" Because Of His Resolve In Iraq
  3. Sen. Chuck Hagel Serves As Co-Chair Of The Bush-Cheney '04 Nebraska Leadership Team.
  4. Sen. Dick Lugar Recently Issued A Statement Praising President Bush And Criticizing John Kerry

Now, this may all be true. But the absence of a logical relationship to Edwards' charge is all pretty obvious. Moreover, Edwards' charge is simply, demonstrably true:

Republicans Criticize Bush 'Mistakes' on Iraq
Sun Sep 19, 2004 01:10 PM ET
Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Leading members of President Bush's Republican Party on Sunday criticized mistakes and "incompetence" in his Iraq policy and called for an urgent ground offensive to retake insurgent sanctuaries.

In appearances on news talk shows, Republican senators also urged Bush to be more open with the American public after the disclosure of a classified CIA report that gave a gloomy outlook for Iraq and raised the possibility of civil war.

"The fact is, we're in deep trouble in Iraq ... and I think we're going to have to look at some recalibration of policy," Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

"We made serious mistakes," said Sen. John McCain, an Arizona Republican who has campaigned at Bush's side this year after patching up a bitter rivalry.
[...]
Sen. Richard Lugar, an Indiana Republican and chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also criticized the administration's handling of Iraq's reconstruction.

Maybe they put "Comical Ali" on the campaign staff...
